Breast Pumps
The world of
breast pumps can be a daunting one. There are many different kinds and styles to choose from.
The reason that many mothers are choosing to pump rather than bottle feed their
babies is because research has shown that nothing is better for a baby’s growth and development than a
mother’s breast milk.
However a woman's health, for working women and for women who are uncomfortable feeding their babies
directly, the issue can be a difficult one. Fortunately there are many different options for breast
pumping.
Automatic breast
pumps
Automatic breast pumps are best suited for ladies who pump
regularly. They are designed to pull the milk out much like similar systems used to milk
cows.
These types of pumps can usually be run from battery power or by
plugging them into a wall socket. A motor causes the pump to operate. Most automatic breast pumps come with two
pumps to simultaneously pump both breasts at once.
The milk is extracted by a funnel shaped tube attached to a
baby bottle or other container. A carrying case and cooler are usually
included with these systems. Some systems have a “let down” feature that simulates the way that a baby sucks on the
nipples. The automatic systems are more expensive than the manual versions. However, they usually extract all milk
within 15 minutes or so, which is a great advantage for women who pump during breaks at
work.
Manual breast pumps
Manual breast pumps use the same kind of extraction as the automatic pumps but rather
than being run by a motor, they are pumped by hand. Usually the pump is operated like a spray bottle. The milk is
extracted by hand and the milk trickles down into a container attached to the pump. Most manual pumps are sold
individually. They are much less expensive than the automatic pumps. The manual pumping system is best for ladies
who only have to pump on rare occasions such as a night out or a weekend away. The manual pump takes much longer to
extract the milk. Pumping by hand can take anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour to empty the breasts.
Breast Pump
accessories
There are many different accessories that can be purchased to go along with the
different kinds of breast pumps. For ladies with larger breasts, there are larger pumps that can be purchased
for more comfort while pumping. Additional storage bottles can be purchased as well. Usually each company will
also sell accessories such as different valves, tubes, motors, and handles. Visit each company’s website to see
what accessories they offer.
Purchasing a pump
When purchasing a pump there are several factors to consider:
• Fit
• Comfort
• Efficiency (how long it takes to pump)
• Lifespan of the product
• Price
• Customer service
• The mother’s lifestyle
• Accessories
If these points are considered carefully then the mother should soon be able to
determine what kind of breast pump to purchase. Remember that if pumping is done exclusively the milk supply will
go down much more quickly. A lot of ladies pump during the day and breast feed at night to keep up the
supply.
